Room Air Conditioners - Icing on the unit

Issue

  • Ice is forming on room air conditioner

Applies to

  • Room Air Conditioners

Solution

Icing on the inside coil of the unit

  • Check the filter is clean. The unit is pulling air through the filter to cool the air. A dirty filter will prevent the unit from being able to pull in air to cool. Shut the unit off and clean the filter. Wait for all ice to dissipate before restarting the unit.
  • Make sure there is nothing blocking the front or back of the unit (curtains/drapes, furniture). Blocking the air flow will cause icing due to the inability to get proper air flow. Curtains, furniture, and other items in home need to be moved and relocated out of the air flow. Allow all ice to dissipate before restarting the unit.
  • If the outside temperature is low (less than 60F) and the AC is in the cool mode, the inside coil can be super cooled causing icing. Try setting the unit mode to “fan only” until ice clears. To prevent reoccurrence, you may try changing temperature setting a few degrees every few hours to allow unit to maintain.

Icing on the outside coil

  • This is normal on heat pump AC units.
  • If ice is impeding the unit's performance, please shut off until ice dissipates or run fan only operation.
  • Slowly dropping set point temp in room over time should prevent a reoccurrence of icing.
